Communication is the governing force behind progress. What we transmit from person to person, culture to culture, has the power to change the face of humankind. Through the guise of the Tree of Life, Transmissions seeks to portray the progression of human communication and its effects on the world.
In the installation, each tree is a representation of a period in human communication. The size, colour, length of the roots and the objects embedded within and hanging from the branches each define a specific period. Conversely, the pillars they stand upon, their size, transparency and material, define the diminishing vastness and global restriction of the world.
From the first instances of recorded communication, through to this age of social media, Transmissions makes tangible how vast our knowledge has expanded and how small the world has become.
